Gauging of Large Bearing Rings Using a Rotary Encoder-Based Instrument

Principal investigator:

Graduate student:

Sponsor:

Timken Inc.

Brief abstract:

The goal of this project is to design and test a novel instrument to be used for measuring the diameter and taper of large bearing rings without the need for a master. We will explore the use of caliper-like instruments that utilize a high-precision rotary encoder as the basic sensing mechanism.

Impact:

Improved metrology and reduced cost for production of large-diameter bearing products.
